What are Postgraduate Programs?
Often referred to as postgraduate, graduate or award programs, the MBA and Master programs are the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master courses available beyond undergraduate study.
What is Coursework?
GSB only offer postgraduate programs by coursework. Coursework is the study undertaken through courses rather than by thesis. For postgraduate programs by thesis see Research & PhD programs.
What are Postgraduate Programs?
Postgraduate programs are the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master Degree courses that are grouped together enabling students to progress (articulate) through different levels of study.
What is Program Articulation?
The Master programs at GSB are generally articulated programs. This means that once you've chosen a program, you have the option of either applying for any course within that program, or applying for the Graduate Certificate and then progressing to the Graduate Diploma and Master Degree. The Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master Degree are generally offered as three separate levels of qualification within our Master programs:
What is Graduate Certificate?
Generally a 4 subject introduction to the area of study. Students that complete the certificate with the required level of academic achievement are
eligible to apply for advanced entry into the Graduate Diploma provided it's within
the same area of study. If a credit average is achieved students can directly apply for the Master Degree.
What is Graduate Diploma?
The second highest level of study within a postgraduate program. The diploma
provides students with a broad overview of their chosen study area and equips
them for professional practice. Students that meet the required level of academic
achievement within the diploma are eligible to apply for advanced entry into
the Masters degree provided it's within the same area of study.
What is MBA / Master Degree?
The highest level of qualification attainable within a Masters program. The Masters equips students for the demands and responsibilities of senior management roles. Depending on the respective entry requirements of each course, participants can enrol directly into a Master's degree or undertake the diploma and certificate courses separately.
Is Qualification/Experience Required?
Qualification and Cognate Qualification
Provided you have 8yrs relevant work experience, you can apply for entry into most postgraduate programs with only evidence of a general capacity to undertake tertiary education (ie TAFE, short course, certificate, etc).
Some courses require a cognate degree or postgraduate qualification (qualification considered relevant by UTS). Generally, any Bachelor of Business or Management degree is considered cognate. Bachelor degrees in Arts/Communications/Science etc are not cognate and can't be considered cognate even if the major was related.
If you have a degree that is not cognate, you can enter most programs with a minimum 2yrs relevant work experience.
Grade Point Average Requirement
Except for MBA Degree C04018 which has specific GPA/GMAT entry requirements, you can NOT use any prior degree with more than 25% fail grades to gain entry into GSB courses. Special circumstances for >25% fails will be considered if justification and supporting documents are included in application.
Relevant Work Experience
Relevant Work Experience is our assessment of the depth of your full-time experience in any "career" capacity (i.e not packing shelves). Experience doesn't need to be at a management/supervisory level and it doesn't need to be in the same industry. However, evaluation of your experience is at UTS discretion.
Providing you have a cognate degree or postgraduate qualification (not TAFE), most of our programs don't require work experience. If you have a degree or postgraduate qualification that is not cognate, you can enter most programs with a minimum 2yrs relevant work experience.
If you're unsure whether you have sufficient work experience, you're encouraged to submit an application for evaluation along with any information that strengthens your application. Entry to programs based on work experience can be subjective. Providing you present a strong case stating your work experience, qualification, life experience etc are equivalent to the required work experience, then you are encouraged to apply.
For more information see How & When to Apply or for specific entry requirements see Courses.
