Helen Chen - Graduate of the Master of Business Degree in International Marketing

Helen Chen is a graduate of the UTS Master of Business Degree in International Marketing.
Helen currently works for Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI), a non-profit public company, driving wool textile Research, Development, Innovation and Product Marketing.

Helen has been a member of UTS: Business Network (web) since 2004 and recently took part in our Bi-annual Mentoring Program (web).

Helen’s mentor was Dr Peter Wong, Manger Business Sales Consultancy, Australia Post. Peter is also a committee member of the UTS: Business Network (web).

What are your Qualifications?

What is your Current Job?

Undertaking business to business liaisons for the Chinese Domestic Market, Supply Chain and Market Intelligence projects; Representing Australian wool industry during bilateral and multilateral trade negotiations: with specific involvement in Australia – China FTA.

Most Enjoyable Part of your Job?

To build and maintain relationships and networks with both the Chinese and the Australian market, including liaison with both government officials, entrepreneurs, especially Australian wool growers, brokers and exporters.

Worst Part of your Job?

Sometimes I get confused and speak English to the Chinese people over the phone, and speak in Chinese to my English colleagues.

What was your First Paid Job?

Working as a part-time reporter at my university’s radio station.

What Motivated you to do Masters?

I am always interested in international business and trade promotions. UTS’ unique International Marketing course was perfect for me as a result.

Why Did you Join the UTS: Business Network?

The UTS: Business Network (web) is a great platform for me to keep myself updated with current market intelligence, it enables me to share professional expertise with others and it offers me an opportunity to contribute to the university.

How did you find the UTS: Business Network Mentoring Program?

UTS Business Network Mentoring Program (web) provides a chance for me as our company does not have a mentoring program in place. I found the program very helpful in assisting me to achieve my goals in terms of improving my self-esteem and professionalism. I also found out that the program is conducted very professionally and I would recommend this program to our postgraduate students.

What are your Best Attributes?

My diverse experiences are in international business and relationship building within a multicultural environment. I am a proficient bilingual communicator.

Where can you Improve?

Leadership.

Recommended Antidote for Work Stress?

Listen to music, especially Chinese classical music, it relaxes me.

How Do you Begin the Working Day?

Check my e-mail or attend an information sharing meeting.

Best Advice you’ve Ever Been Given?

Believe in yourself.

Who Inspires you and Why?

People who have strong determination to succeed. Such as Marie Curie, who had to fight the prejudices as a female scientist of her day. With her courage, compassionate yet stubbornly determined nature, she paved the way for nuclear physics and
cancer therapy through her discovery of radium.

What's your Greatest Career Achievement?

Six and a half years ago I arrived in Australia as an independent skilled immigrant from China; I began to re-build my career in a new country, and completed my Master Degree at UTS.
