Sharon Everson is the Executive Director - Corporate, of The Deaf Society of NSW (website)

The Deaf Society is a non-profit organisation that provides a range of life-important services to deaf people and their families in core service areas, such as welfare support, community development, Auslan (Australian Sign Language) interpreting, education, training and employment support.

Sharon's work is always varied and includes submission writing, preparing budgeting and financial reports, production of annual strategic plans, through to day to day co-ordination and management, with the occasional requirement to provide direct client support.

Most enjoyable part of your job?

Being able to witness the tremendous improvements in the lives of deaf people over the past three decades, including the increased recognition of Auslan as a community language and the development of new methods of service delivery.

Best advice you've ever been given?

Learn to compartmentalise - let go of work related matters on your trip home and focus on your home life when the working day is over.

Recent Achievements

I have recently been working in partnership with a local deaf community, their hearing supporters and the State Government in order to establish a regional outreach office which will provide direct support to deaf people and their families in the northern rivers region.

The successful operation of this service will demonstrate to government the importance of providing locally based services and encourage the funding of similar services.
