Claire Geary - MBA Profile

The MBA has fulfilled all my expectations; Knowledge, Networks, Challenge, Sense of achievement, late nights and early mornings!
Having worked in general management roles for some years, I felt I needed something more than my undergraduate degree and honours studies had given me.
I saw an MBA as providing the impetus I needed to do my job better, and to move ahead on both an intellectual and career level.
UTS was my chosen university for its wide range of subjects, including majors and sub-majors, a variety of flexible class modes, and proximity to work. It's a great learning environment, and I really enjoy the camaraderie of my university colleagues. I am currently the postgraduate representative on the UTS Faculty of Business Board.
Current Position
My current role is as Operations Manager for heritage consultants Godden Mackay Logan, who are a leading provider of advisory and research services in environmental heritage, planning, interpretation and archaeology.
In this role, I am involved in all facets of business management - HR, strategy, finance, marketing, and so on. And as the firm grows (we now have 38 staff), so too does my job!
My MBA studies have direct application to my job and not a day goes past when I am not drawing on the skills and knowledge I am developing through the MBA program.
I consider myself very fortunate for having a position which allows me to experiment with and apply what I am learning, and also to be undertaking a degree which is allowing me to grow and develop my management and business acumen.
Achievements
I graduated from UTS with a Bachelor of Arts (Leisure Studies) in 1993 and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Leisure Studies and undertook the Business Management Certificate from the Australian Institute of Management prior to commencing the MBA.
I was awarded a UTS Faculty of Business Scholarship for my Honours studies,
and the Chief Executive Women's MBA Scholarship shortly after commencing my
MBA studies at UTS.
Other Achievements
My work history includes part-time lecturer and a research assistant in the School of Leisure and Tourism Studies at UTS, and the Community Development Officer and then Executive Officer at Hornsby Shire Council.
During my time at Council, I held Executive roles with the NSW Local Government Management Planners Network and was an active member of Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA).
2001
Awarded a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow
2000
Awarded LGMA McArthur Management Younger Member Development Award.
1999
Selected for a Rotary Group Study Exchange to Turkey and represented Australia at Asia-Pacific Youth Forum in Japan.
