Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Subject Exemption


Also referred to as subject exemption, credit for previous study or advanced standing, the following procedure for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) relates only to the UTS Graduate School of Business.



RPL Application Lodgement Dates


  • Prospective Student RPL Applications
    Please submit your RPL application together with your course application.
  • Current Student RPL Applications
    RPL applications can next be lodged from Monday 26th May to Friday 6th June 2008 at the Student Centre Haymarket (postgraduate). Students are strongly encouraged to have all exemptions finalised by the end of their first semester.


Number of Subject Exemptions Allowed


To be awarded a UTS qualification, you need to have completed a certain amount of subjects at UTS. The number of exemptions allowed in each course are as follows:

Executive MBA No Exemption
MBA Degree max 10 subjects
(4 core subjects can be undergraduate)
All Master of Business or Master of Management
Degrees (excluding MBA but including Master of Professional Accounting & Master of Professional Accounting Extended)
max 8 subjects
(4 core subjects can be undergraduate)
Graduate Diploma max 5 subjects
(2 core subjects can be undergraduate)
Graduate Certificate No exemption (except approved UTS Short Courses)


Subject Exemption Assessment


Exemptions are granted where your previous study is deemed equivalent to UTS subjects. We recommend you first compare the subject descriptions from your previous study with the subject descriptions in our UTS: Course Handbook. For further information please contact us.



Apply for Subject Exemption:


  1. First read our 1 page Policy and Procedure on Subject Exemptions (40k PDF). If the relevant documents are not lodged correctly your application cannot be accepted for processing.
  1. Send completed Exemption (RPL) Form (40k PDF) and Exemption Checklist (30k PDF) to Student Centre Haymarket (postgraduate).
